A move of 1,000 miles or more is considered a long-distance move. That’s why normal rates are not appropriate. Such a move can cost $5,000 or more, depending on a number of factors.
Below you’ll find some tips from us to make such a complicated move as easy as possible for you.
1) Find a good moving company as early as possible
If you start looking for a company ahead of time, take your time and research reviews and offers from different companies that do long distance moving. Many companies only provide moving services within Calgary. Also, make sure that they pack your belongings and not just provide transportation.
After you get prices from at least three companies, you need to choose who will move you. Our advice is to choose an average price. If you choose the cheapest, there’s no guarantee that they’ll handle it 100% and you won’t have added expenses later.
2) Plan your move
Once you’ve chosen a moving company, you need to think through all the dates. When will be the day to move out of your old house and move into your new home? When will you have all of your things ready to move? Wouldn’t it be better to take a vacation for the duration of the move?
Don’t hesitate to ask the moving company questions. They can help you choose the best dates and tell you when to bring your belongings to your new place.
You should also choose how you will get to the new place yourself. Will it be by car or by plane? If you are going to drive such a long distance it is worth booking a hotel and seeing where you can stay for refreshments. This is especially important if you will be with children and/or pets.
3) Plan for expenses
Be prepared for a lot of expenses. This doesn’t just have to do with the cost of movers. An additional expense item is the cost of travel for you. If it’s a plane – the cost of tickets, and cabs. If it’s your own transportation – the cost of gas, hotels, and food. Remember that the cost of gasoline can vary.
Make sure you have enough money. Even if you have planned everything perfectly, it’s better to add 20% to that amount for unexpected expenses.
4) Start packing in advance
It’s best to start packing in advance. You should have everything ready to go by moving day. Things you don’t need should be sold or donated to charity. This way you will save space in the truck and time for loading.
